FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida teenager walking his family's 9-year-old Shih Tzu was attacked by a loose neighborhood dog, and the smaller animal was killed.
The 16-year-old boy was walking Monroe the Shih Tzu and the family's other dog at 1 a.m. Sunday when another dog approached them and attacked, the teen's mother, Keturah Hail, told WPLG.
The teen was also bitten during the attack. The owner of the dog that attacked said his dog got loose, and the Shih Tzu was walking without a leash.
The Shih Tzu was rushed to the emergency vet but died later.
The cause of the attack is now under investigation with the Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division. Philip Goen, an investigator with the agency, said they have to make sure the dog that bit the teen has current rabies vaccinations.
Hail said her son is being vaccinated against rabies as a precaution.
