Retired deputy gets 13 years for fatally shooting son-in-law

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A retired Florida deputy has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for fatally shooting his daughter’s estranged husband. The Palm Beach Post reports that 64-year-old Carlton Nebergall was sentenced Tuesday. He was convicted of manslaughter earlier this year. Investigators say Nebergall’s daughter was living with him at his Acreage home in 2018 when his son-in-law, Jacob Lodge, stopped by. Nebergall testified that he fired a warning shot when he heard his daughter and Lodge arguing. Nebergall says Lodge began to drive away but later got out of his car. Nebergall said he was afraid for his safety and fired at the man.
