MARATHON, Fla. (AP) — Two people have died after a small plane crashed shortly after taking off from the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport.
The aircraft, a 1961 Cessna 210 Centurion, was believed to have been bound for Savannah, Georgia, when it departed at around 6 a.m.
Authorities say the wreckage went unnoticed until shortly after 9 a.m., when a passing boater spotted a body floating in the water. A second body was later recovered.
The identities of the victims were under investigation.
The Monroe Sheriff's Office says the two were believed to be the only people on board the flight, but a dive team is searching waters near Rachael Key.
Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration were en route from Miami.
The Centurion is a single-engine aircraft that usually sits six people.
