COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Sen. Darline Graham has privately expressed interest in running for a full Senate term after getting appointed as a temporary replacement for her late brother, Lindsey Graham, according to three people familiar with the deliberations. The people, who were not authorized to speak publicly, said she has started having conversations about a potential campaign. Plans for Lindsey Graham's funeral were also announced on Friday. There will be a service in Washington on July 28 and more in South Carolina on July 29. Darline Graham's eventual decision could dramatically shake up the scramble to fill her late brother's seat after he died last weekend. The filing period for a special primary runs from July 21 to July 28, and the primary is scheduled for Aug. 11. Several other noteworthy politicians — including Reps. Russell Fry, Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, as well as Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette — have been eyeing a run. Darline Graham's conversations were first reported by Semafor. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham to serve the remainder of her brother's term, which ends in January. In his announcement on Monday, McMaster made no reference to her as a placeholder or symbolic appointment. The first woman to represent the state in the Senate, Darline Graham called it "such an honor,” as dozens of her brother’s staffers and campaign advisers stood behind her, some with eyes glassy from welling tears. “Lindsey has always been there for me. And now, I will be there for him," she said. Lindsey Graham died on Saturday at age 71. A preliminary report from the medical examiner said he suffered a tear in his aorta. He never married or had a family of his own, but his sister was often by his side for the political touch points of his career, speaking at events and appearing in some of his campaign ads.

Trump used the primetime address to the nation to elevate his yearslong push to raise doubts about the legitimacy of U.S. elections and dispute his 2020 loss — this time, to justify his push to pass a strict voter ID bill. His allegations of interference and influence didn’t include key context. Nor did he produce evidence that votes had been manipulated or that the election outcome had been altered. On Friday, DHS unveiled newly declassified documents showing that more than 250,000 non-citizens are registered to vote across the four U.S. states.

UVALDE, Texas (AP) — First responders in Texas are rescuing people trapped in high waters as another round of dangerous flooding has struck southern parts of the state. The storms and flooding that began Tuesday are being blamed for two deaths, while more than 200 people have been rescued by emergency officials in boats and helicopters over the past several days. Authorities in several areas including Sutton, Crockett and Zavala counties west of San Antonio say water rescues are ongoing Friday. A flash flood emergency was declared for Sonora in Sutton County. Floodwaters have begun receding in some of the hardest hit areas including Uvalde and cleanup efforts are underway.

The destruction of the tower directly degrades IRGC’s ability to coordinate attacks on innocent civilian crew members. Two men have pleaded not guilty to federal conspiracy charges in connection with an alleged plot to attack President Donald Trump's UFC event on the White House lawn. Tycen Proper, 19, of Ohio, and Chandler Scaggs, 21, of West Virginia, entered their pleas Thursday in federal court in Columbus, Ohio. Their trial is scheduled to begin September 14. Prosecutors allege the two men were among eight people involved in a plot to use drones and snipers to attack the UFC Freedom 250 event, which was held in June as part of celebrations marking the nation's 250th anniversary. The defendants face charges including conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists and conspiracy to commit murder on federal government property and of a federal government official.

Federal investigators say remains of several geese were found on the wreckage of a sightseeing helicopter that crashed into the Hudson River last year, killing six people. A report released by the National Transportation Safety Board says evidence from the wreckage and witness accounts suggest the helicopter may have struck multiple birds before plunging into the river on April 10, 2025. The crash killed the pilot and five passengers. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash as they work to determine its cause.

President Donald Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., has been extended through the end of his current term. The Pentagon says the mission will continue until January 20, 2029, unless the president ends it earlier. Trump initially ordered the deployment in August 2025 as part of his administration’s effort to address crime in the nation’s capital. The administration says crime has fallen since the deployment began, although local officials maintain that crime rates were already declining before troops arrived. National Guard members have assisted law enforcement with arrests, responded to medical emergencies and participated in cleanup and beautification projects across the city.
