President Donald Trump is hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for talks at the White House on Friday. The U.S. leader is signaling he’s not ready to agree to sell Kyiv a long-range missile system that the Ukrainians say they desperately need. The meeting comes a day after Trump had a lengthy phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In recent days, Trump had shown openness to selling Ukraine long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles, even as Putin warned against it. Following Thursday’s call with Putin, Trump appeared to downplay the prospects of Ukraine getting the missiles.
The U.S. has seized survivors after a strike Thursday on a suspected drug-carrying vessel in the Caribbean, the first since President Donald Trump began launching deadly attacks in the region this summer, according to a defense official and another person familiar with the matter.
The people confirmed the strike Friday on the condition of anonymity because it has not yet been acknowledged by President Donald Trump’s administration. It is believed to be at least the sixth strike since Augus, and the first to result in survivors who were picked up by the U.S. military. It was not immediately clear what would be done with the individuals.
This strike on Thursday brings the death toll from the Trump administration's military action against vessels in the region to at least 28.
The survivors of this strike now face an unclear future and legal landscape, including questions about whether they are now considered to be prisoners of war or defendants in a criminal case.
John Bolton pleaded not guilty Friday to charges accusing the former President Donald Trump national security adviser turned critic of emailing classified information to family members and keeping top secret documents at his Maryland home. Bolton did not comment to reporters as he entered the courthouse in Greenbelt, Maryland, where he made his initial appearance before a judge on the 18-count indictment brought against him on Thursday. It’s third criminal case brought in recent weeks by the Justice Department against a Trump adversary, and is unfolding against the backdrop of growing concerns that the Republican president is using the law enforcement agency to seek retribution against his perceived enemies.
Spirit Airlines says it plans to furlough more than 360 pilots and downgrade up to 170 others as part of a sweeping restructuring effort aimed at cutting costs.
The Florida-based budget carrier filed for bankruptcy in August — its second filing in less than a year — and says the reductions are necessary to save about $100 million annually in pilot expenses.
Spirit also plans to reduce its flight attendant and corporate staff as part of the cost-cutting plan. The company said the moves are designed to stabilize operations and help the airline return to profitability.
President Donald Trump said he authorized another strike on a Venezuelan boat suspected of smuggling drugs, marking the latest U.S. operation targeting narcotics traffickers in the Caribbean. Officials said the strike occurred in international waters and that there were survivors.
Trump defended the operation during remarks at the White House, saying the action was necessary to combat drug trafficking and hold Venezuela accountable.
“I authorized for two reasons, really,” Trump said. “Number one, they have emptied their prisons into the United States of America. They came in through the border because we had an open border policy. A lot of these countries — they’re not the only one — but they’re the worst abuser.”
The president added that large amounts of drugs continue to enter the United States from Venezuela, much of it moved by sea.
President Donald Trump announced new federal guidance aimed at encouraging employers to offer fertility coverage, part of a broader initiative to make family planning treatments more affordable.
Trump also said his administration has reached a deal with major drugmakers to reduce the cost of fertility medications. Under the plan, patients will be able to purchase discounted fertility drugs directly from manufacturers through a new government website called TrumpRx.
The president said the move is designed to expand access to fertility treatments and ease the financial burden for families seeking to have children.
